The album opens with a master class in the form of '45'. A great portrayal of how music and friends help you through a break up. A brilliant opener that lures the listener into the rest of the album. Individual songs such as 'Handwritten' portrays Fallon's desire to write his music predominantly about 'ordinary life'. The song still resembles the Introspective lyrics that are often heard in a lot of 'The Gaslight Anthem's' music. With the band finding most of their inspiration from other music, magazines and films, Brian Fallon in particular believes that he is 'a Kellogg's guy'. Handwritten is supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening. A message to their fans, loyal fans especially will take this personally. The song was written on paper, and no computers were allowed. This was done so when writing the song, Fallon could really appreciated what he was writing. Most importantly, so he could believe in it.
In the deluxe edition of the album 'Handwritten' there is a video that shows how the band have reacted to the change that has taken place. With many band members stating that 'this is what we have wanted to sound like, but we just didn't know it at first'.
Recorded at Blackbird Studio, Nashville, with the experiences Brendan O'Brien who's past clients had included Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Incubus. The album tells a story, and through this story the heartland punk band are able to search for their dream of one day joining the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. With more work like this, I have no doubt that they will soon join the likes of Jackson Browne and fellow legends of music.
